312. “I’m your boyfriend now, blehlehleh.”

The episode:The Giant Gila Monster,” ep. 402

The riff: Growled by Joel as the Giant Gila Monster flicks its lizard tongue out.

The explanation: This is a direct reference to the original 1984 version of the horror classic “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” Heather Langenkamp’s character gets a phone call, hoping it’s from her boyfriend (played by Johnny Depp in his first role). Instead, the mouthpiece of the phone turns into a literal mouth, with Freddy’s tongue licking Nancy’s face. “I’m your boyfriend now, Nancy,” he growls.

Novelty factor: This one is right in my wheelhouse, all the way. I just watched several of these movies in the last few weeks.
