285. “I think they were making a Men Without Hats video while they were shooting this movie.”

The episode:Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell,” ep. 703

The riff: Observed by Tom as a group of Renaissance fair lookalikes go traipsing around in some sort of outdoor medieval festival.

The explanation: He’s referring to the iconic 1983 hit by Men Without Hats, “The Safety Dance,” or more accurately to its music video. Going completely against the synth and electronic-heavy New Wave sound, it inexplicably featured lead singer Ivan Doroschuck skipping through an idyllic medieval village, trailed by a wench and his lute-playing dwarf companion. He goes to a festival similar to the one in the film, which inexplicably has guys wearing chicken masks for whatever reason.

Novelty factor: The video was from three years before I was born and I didn’t follow a lot of music when I was young, but I still knew of it back then. I actually remember first seeing clips of it during TV “best of the 1980s” CD sets in the mid-1990s. It’s definitely one of the most famously goofy music videos of that goofy decade.
