The episode: “Godzilla vs. Megalon,” ep. 212
The riff: Intoned in a deep voice as a young boy paddling a bizarre aquatic device appears to get sucked into the whirlpool created by an emerging monster.
The explanation: Crow is imitating the omniscient voice of author Jean Shepard in the seminal 1983 holiday black comedy “A Christmas Story.” Shepard narrates the film, which is based on childhood memories of the holiday season, and his narration is fraught with bits of overdramatic prose in this vein. I believe the specific line he’s referring to is the first time Ralphie’s mother tells him he’ll “shoot his eye out” with a BB gun, and he says those words are “insurmountable by any means known to kid-dom.”
Novelty factor: I know “A Christmas Story” nearly by heart. This could not be more obvious for me.
