The riff: Added by Mike as an establishing shot for the short shows us a location, “Kellock Hall Women’s Residence.”
The explanation: He’s referring to the 1980-1982 ABC sitcom “Bosom Buddies,” which starred Scolari and a very young Tom Hanks, still 6 years before “Big.” In the show, the two were a pair of down-on-their-luck guys working in advertising, desperate for a place to live in New York. The only place available, though, is an apartment complex that is all for women. Therefore, the entire show revolved around Hanks and Scolari dressing in drag to blend in at the building while simultaneously trying to romance the other women in their male identities. It was canceled after two seasons.
Novelty factor: I’ve heard the name before on a number of occasions, but I never actually knew what “Bosom Buddies” was about, nor did I realize it starred Tom Hanks. I am thoroughly unsurprised that Billy Joel’s “My Life” is the theme song, though. I had always assumed it was a sitcom theme at some point–it sounds like it was written to be one.
