225. “Sturm and Drang are calling.”

The episode:Bride of the Monster,” ep. 423

The riff: I usually like to use riffs from the theater, but I couldn’t resist the obscurity of this one, which Joel says when he sees the Mads are calling from Deep 13.

The explanation: Alright, so like I said, it’s obscure. “Sturm und Drang” was a German literary and stage movement of the 1760s to 1780s, a precursor of Romanticism. It takes its title from a play of the same name, and the words literally translated mean “storm and stress.” Sturm und Drang is characterized by “works containing rousing action and high emotionalism that often deal with the individual’s revolt against society.” Today, it also appears to be the name of a metal band, because why not?

Novelty factor: I have definitely heard this term before, which is what made me pause to look it up. I kind of thought it would be the name of a pair of characters, though, so clearly I was incorrect.
