The episode: “Hamlet,” ep. 1009
The riff: Spoken by Crow in impersonation of an off-screen character as Hamlet seems to be putting the moves on Ophelia.
The explanation: They’re referencing Frank Capra’s classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” here. In the film, Sam Wainright is the former boyfriend of George Bailey’s love interest Mary Hatch, and an old friend of George’s who becomes successful in business. In one of the film’s climactic scenes, George and Mary share a phone while on a long-distance call to Sam before finally admitting their love for one another. Instead of being jilted, Wainright turns out to be a good guy, donating $25,000 to the Bailey’s efforts to keep the family’s Building and Loan operational.
Novelty factor: It has honestly been so long since I’ve seen the movie that I didn’t even recognize the character’s name. From what I gather, though, Sam Wainright has always been something of an underappreciated fellow in the eyes of many.
