157. “No, but I’ve got a Singapore Sling.”

The episode:The Giant Gila Monster,” ep. 402

The riff: Replied by Crow in response to the line of dialog, “You’ve probably got a screwdriver, right?” from one cop to another.

The explanation: Since a screwdriver is a popular highball drink, Crow is referencing another alcoholic “long drink” (not technically a cocktail) in the Singapore Sling. The drink was invented way back in 1915 by a Chinese bartender in Singapore, and is notable for its unusually long and complicated list of ingredients. The currently accepted “official” guidelines for a Singapore Sling call for gin, cherry brandy, Cointreau, Benedictine, grenadine, pineapple juice, lemon juice and Angostura bitters.

Novelty factor: I know of this particular cocktail, but I’ve never had one before. I can’t even imagine what all of those ingredients would taste like in one glass, except that it would surely be fruity and herbal. NOTE: I absolutely love this bartender guy and have watched many of his drink videos.
