135. “Whoa, is she breastfeeding him all of a sudden? What is she, Tori Amos?”

The episode:The Projected Man,” ep. 901

The riff: Incredulously asked by Crow as a female scientist holds a monkey for an experiment to her breast, just below the frame of the shot.

The explanation: This is a reference to singer-songwriter Tori Amos’ third album from 1996, “Boys for Pele.” On the inside cover, there was a famously provocative shot of Amos breastfeeding a piglet…for some reason. I’m not going to try to explain it, but there’s a bit about it in this article on “Great moments in pop nudity,” if you’re curious.

Novelty factor: I have never really listened to much Tori Amos music, so I didn’t know about this. Honestly, I feel like most of my exposure to any information about Amos over the years has been because of her close friendship with comics/novel writer Neil Gaiman, who I love. They’re often working in collaboration, but he’s yet to convince me of why he believes she is so special.
