123. “Paul is a dead man, miss him, miss him!”

The episode:Invasion of the Neptune Men,” ep. 819

The riff: Chanted in a deep voice by Crow as a record player starts playing a record backwards.

The explanation: This is a rather clever riff reference to the whole “Paul is dead” hoax/conspiracy theory. If you’ve somehow never heard it, the theory began in 1969 and contends that Paul McCartney died in 1966 and was replaced in The Beatles by a lookalike. Fans and believers in the 1960s scoured Beatles songs for “secret clues” to the death, the most famous of which is probably John Lennon supposedly saying “I Buried Paul” at the end of “Strawberry Fields Forever.” This is a reference to another “clue” that one apparently gets from playing the end of “I’m So Tired” backward: Lennon saying “Paul is a dead man, miss him, miss him.” NOTE: Play it loud in order to hear.

Novelty factor: I knew a good bit about the Paul McCartney death conspiracy theory, but I hadn’t heard this particular bit of backward music before. By the way, if you ended up on this website by searching “Paul is dead” conspiracies on Google, please get a life, will you?
