109. “Hey, a glowing challah!”

The episode:The Space Children,” ep. 906

The riff: Exclaimed by Tom as the titular children search a cave and discover a pulsing extraterrestrial brain blob. Note: My apologies, but this is one of the few episodes that isn’t online in its entirety, so I can’t link to it.

The explanation: They’re comparing the shape of the brain to a loaf of challah, a traditional Jewish bread. The bread is “braided” with six strands woven together to form a very distinctive-looking loaf. Challah is eaten as part of both Sabbath and holiday celebrations, and is a staple of traditional Jewish cuisine.

Novelty factor: I love me a good loaf of challah. Note: It’s basically pronounced “holla,” with a guttural “h” sound.

Brain bread.

Brain bread.
