105. “He’s got to get to his ‘Lust in the Dust’ audition.”

The episode:San Francisco International,” ep. 614

The riff: Muttered by Servo as one of the film’s faceless actors “clocks out of the movie.”

The explanation: Another example of the “audition joke” the MST3k writers liked as a way to compare actors to one another. In this case, they’re comparing the blonde beefcake guy in the film to actor Tab Hunter, who played the role of Abel Wood in 1985’s “Lust in the Dust.” This odd comedy western starred the cross-dressing actor “Divine” in the lead role, his first appearance in a film not directed by John Waters. All in all, it looks like a pretty odd flick. NOTE: As it turns out, this actor actually is Tab Williams. Suddenly, it makes much more sense.

Novelty factor: All new to me, although this one looks rather amusing. I wish I had known about “Lust in the Dust” when we did a bad movie night that was dedicated to westerns.
