103. “Like a circle in a spiral, like a wheel within a wheel…”

The episode:Crash of the Moons,” ep. 417

The riff: Sung by Servo as a space station wobbily rotates through what appears to be a thunderstorm in the middle of space. Don’t ask me to explain.

The explanation: This is a snatch of the song “The Windmills of Your Mind,” which was made famous in 1968 as the theme of the original “Thomas Crown Affair.” It won the Oscar for Best Original Song that year, and was covered numerous times in the years that followed by artists like Dusty Springfield and Sting, who sang it for the 1999 remake of the same film. Here is the full original song in its entirety.

Novelty factor: I didn’t recognize the reference, although I’ve seen the Pierce Brosnan remake of the movie. I’ve never seen the original.
