82. “Oh, Little Audrey’s day!”

The episode:Hercules and the Captive Women,” ep. 412

The riff: Sung in a goofy voice by Joel as Hercules views a misty vision of his friend begging for help.

The explanation: Tracking the lyrics wasn’t too complicated: It’s a reference to the opening song of the 1950s cartoon series “Little Audrey,” which was basically a rip-off of the famously adventurous “Little Lulu.” Audrey’s series was much the same, as the individualistic and rebellious girl got into trouble for her shenanigans. What I don’t understand is what inspired the reference–what about the foggy vision that Hercules sees has anything to do with Little Audrey? I’m rather puzzled by this one. Does anybody have an idea?

Novelty factor: Definitely no idea here. I figured it was a lyric from a pop song or something. I do know of Little Lulu, but I’d never heard of Audrey. I’m still scratching my head over the meaning of the joke.

What do you think, sirs?
