72. “It’s a kingdom of Robert Borks.”

The episode:The Sword and the Dragon,” ep. 617

The riff: Observed by Mike as a bunch of bearded medieval Russian guys list their grievances to the king.

The explanation: Robert Bork was a law scholar, professor and eventual judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. In 1987 he was nominated for an open Supreme Court position by Ronald Reagan, but ultimately was rejected by the Senate in an intensely partisan battle. As Mike implies, pretty much everybody in this weird Russo-Finnish fantasy film looks at least a little Borkian, especially in their choices of facial hair. This is just another riff that shows the wide range of topical knowledge of the SOL crew.

Novelty factor: When Mike said the riff, I remembered the name “Robert Bork” and knew it was something politically related. I probably couldn’t have named the actual context, though.

  1. Interestingly, Bork’s beard was a topic of sorts in his confirmation hearings. Senator Howell Heflin of Alabama suggested that Bork’s unusual facial hair was evidence of his “weird lifestyle.” Even as political smears go, that was a strange one.

What do you think, sirs?
