35. “Based on the award-winning stage play by Lillian Hellman.”

The episode:Sidehackers,” ep. 202

The riff: Snarkily quipped by Crow during the movie’s screenwriting credit.

The explanation: Hellman was a prolific American author of plays and screenplays for nearly half a century, from the 1930s until her death in 1984. She was known for her left-wing politics and rather downbeat-sounding plays. I can’t really tell if there’s some kind of connection that makes Crow associate her with “Sidehackers,” a movie about bikers, or if he’s just making the joke because it seems far away from something that she would normally write. After making the joke he laughs to himself, but no one else reacts so he drops it defeatedly.

Novelty factor: I’ve never even heard her name before, but it sounds like she was a very well-respected and influential playwright.
