22. “Toast and marmalade with tea, sailing ships upon the sea.”

The episode:The Magic Voyage of Sinbad,” ep. 505

The riff: Beautifully sung by Joel as a trio of Sinbad’s ships plow through choppy waters.

The explanation: A direct quote from the 1971 psychadelic pop song “Toast and Marmalade for Tea” by Australian rock group Tin Tin. Released as a single in the U.S., the song made it to #20 on the Billboard charts, but Tin Tin failed to ever chart with anything again, making them a legitimate one-hit wonder. Joel may have been reminded of the nautically themed video at the bottom of this page when writing the riff, although he slightly misremembered the lyric as “with” tea rather than for tea.

Novelty factor: I’ve never heard of Tin Tin, much less the song. This may be a riff that you just had to be alive in 1971 to expect to understand.
