21. “Younger…than springtime are you, sir.”

The episode:The Dead Talk Back,” ep. 603

The riff: Interjected by Crow in the middle of a sentence. One cop is referring to a character named Harold Yonger, and says “Yonger…was still in his room,” but the large pause is big enough for Crow to insert “than springtime are you, sir.”

The explanation: It’s a reference to a lyric and song title from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “South Pacific.” The song, “Younger than Springtime,” is a romantic jazz song between lovers, which is what the bots seem to be casting this pair of cops as. If they were, it might actually inject a little levity into this extremely boring film.

Novelty factor: I had no clue. I’ve had a chance to see a variety of musicals through my entertainment reporting job, but never have I heard anything from “South Pacific.” My first time hearing the song is as performed by Mandy Patinkin (Inigo Montoya from “The Princess Bride”) below.
